Outdoor Sauna Foundations: How to Support a Freestanding Sauna and Prepare the Ground

You have chosen your outdoor sauna. Now, what does it actually stand on?


It sounds like a simple question, but there are really two things to consider. First, how is the sauna itself supported and kept off the ground? Second, what do those supports stand on?


These details matter particularly with a wooden outdoor sauna. Keeping the wooden structure away from prolonged ground moisture, allowing air to circulate beneath it and providing stable, level support all contribute to how the sauna performs over the years.


There is also an important distinction to make. If a sauna is built on site much like a small house, its foundation is normally designed as part of the building itself. In this article, we are talking primarily about freestanding and prefabricated outdoor saunas, whether delivered fully finished and ready to use, like Hetki Saunas, or supplied as DIY kits or flat-packs for assembly on site.


And this does not need to make your sauna project complicated. For many freestanding outdoor saunas, preparing the site can be relatively straightforward. The important thing is to understand what comes with the sauna, what needs to be underneath it and what you need to prepare before delivery.


How Are Hetki Saunas Supported and Why It Matters?


When we designed Hetki Saunas, we wanted the solution underneath the sauna to follow the same principles as the rest of it: durable, straightforward and designed as part of the complete product. The result helps protect the wooden structure from moisture, supports airflow and ventilation, and makes delivering and installing the sauna fully assembled much simpler.

A wooden outdoor sauna should not sit directly on the ground. If timber remains exposed to moisture for extended periods, deterioration and eventually rot can follow. And this is not only about protecting the lifespan of the sauna or your investment. Prolonged moisture problems can eventually affect structural safety and create conditions for mould and other unwanted biological growth, with potential consequences for indoor air quality and health.


This matters even more when designing a sauna intended to bring joy and wellbeing for decades, if not generations.


That is why every Hetki Sauna has robust, patented integrated steel feet.


The feet are fixed structural components of the sauna and are included as part of the product. They create defined support points beneath the building while keeping the wooden base structure clearly separated from the surface below. The integrated steel feet also provide a capillary break between the wooden structure and the surface below, helping prevent moisture from travelling into the timber through capillary action.


The feet are positioned beneath the corners of the sauna, with additional support points used in larger models where required by the structure. Because the feet are fixed rather than adjustable, the support points prepared for the sauna need to be stable and level.

The feet are structural, but we saw no reason why something necessary for the structure should need to be hidden. They were also designed to be part of the appearance of the sauna, fitting naturally into its surroundings, whether in an urban garden or backyard, or in a more rural setting.


Airflow and Ventilation Under a Hetki Outdoor Sauna


Keeping the sauna raised also leaves open space beneath it. Air can circulate underneath, helping the lower structures dry after sauna use and cleaning, as well as from moisture caused by rain, snowmelt and humid outdoor air.


In a Hetki Sauna, that open space has another important purpose. Part of the sauna's fresh-air intake is designed to work through the floor, using natural airflow as part of the ventilation system. Keeping the sauna raised from the surface below therefore supports not only moisture management, but also the way the sauna itself works.


Ventilation is one of the most important elements of a good sauna experience, yet it is surprisingly easy to overlook when comparing saunas. Whatever outdoor sauna you are considering, it is worth asking a simple question: where does the fresh air come from, and how has the ventilation been designed?


Designed for Easy Sauna Delivery and Installation, the Hetki way


The integrated feet also support another important part of the Hetki concept: our saunas can be built completely ready at our factory in Finland and delivered fully assembled. The sauna arrives as a complete building and is simply lifted onto its prepared support points. There is no need to build the sauna on site or construct a separate support structure as part of the installation.


For a typical installation, the preparation can be relatively straightforward. A properly prepared and compacted gravel or crushed stone area with suitable concrete or paving slabs beneath the steel feet is often all that is required. There is no automatic need to pour a full concrete slab simply because you are buying a substantial outdoor sauna.


The same principle gives flexibility in where the sauna can be installed. An existing patio, paved area, concrete slab or structurally adequate deck or terrace may provide a perfectly suitable base, provided it can safely carry the load and the sauna's support points are stable and level.


The result is a much simpler installation and commissioning process: once the site is properly prepared, the sauna can be lifted into place and made ready for use quickly, without turning the installation into a construction project. Hetki: Built for Decades, but Not Permanently Tied to One Place


We hope that when a Hetki Sauna finds its home, it will stay there and bring joy and wellbeing for decades.


But life changes. If you move home and want to take your sauna with you, the combination of a fully assembled structure and integrated support system makes relocation possible without dismantling the sauna or separating it from a permanent foundation.


The sauna can be lifted, transported and placed onto suitable prepared support points at its new home, much in the same way as when it was originally delivered. Permanent quality does not necessarily have to mean permanently fixed to one location.


Other Ways to Support a Freestanding Outdoor Sauna


Hetki's approach with robust, integrated steel feet is relatively unusual. Not every freestanding outdoor sauna uses integrated steel feet, or even a similar built-in support system. There are several other ways of supporting a sauna and separating its wooden structure from the ground.


When comparing them, the important question is not simply which solution sounds best. Look at how the sauna you are considering is actually supported, what is included with it and what you will need to build or prepare yourself.


Wooden Supports and Skids for Outdoor Saunas


Wooden supports or skids are commonly seen beneath smaller outdoor buildings, barrel saunas and some prefabricated or DIY saunas. They can provide a simple and relatively inexpensive way of supporting a lighter structure. The timber supports may themselves stand on paving slabs, concrete blocks, gravel or another prepared surface.


The main consideration is moisture. When the lowest supporting components are also made of timber, keeping them away from prolonged moisture becomes particularly important. Even treated timber is not immune to deterioration if it remains damp for extended periods. Good drainage, sufficient separation from the ground and airflow beneath the sauna therefore matter greatly with this type of construction.


Wooden skids can be a practical solution for lighter structures when properly designed and installed. For a permanent wooden sauna intended to remain outdoors for decades, however, it is worth asking whether you want timber to be the material closest to the ground in the first place.


Concrete Piers and Blocks for Outdoor Saunas


Concrete piers, blocks and similar point supports are a well-established way of supporting small buildings and outdoor saunas.


Instead of supporting the entire footprint continuously, the sauna rests on a number of defined support points. This can reduce the amount of material and site work compared with pouring a complete concrete slab and can provide good airflow beneath the sauna.


The important part is getting the support points right. Their position must correspond with the load-bearing structure of the sauna, and they need to provide sufficient load-bearing capacity and be stable and level. Where timber rests directly on concrete, masonry or another porous mineral surface, it is also good practice to provide a capillary break between the two materials. A suitable moisture-resistant layer, such as bituminous membrane, can help prevent moisture from being transferred from the support into the timber through capillary action.


In fact, this is how we supported our own saunas when we first started crafting Hetki log saunas. It is a proven solution and it worked. But as we developed the sauna further, we wanted a better solution for our customers: one that was integrated into the sauna itself, protected the wooden structure, simplified installation and also became part of the overall design. That thinking eventually led to the integrated steel feet we use today.


This also raises a useful question when comparing outdoor saunas: who provides the support system? With some saunas, the concrete piers or blocks effectively become the feet of the building and therefore need to be constructed as part of the site preparation. With Hetki, the steel feet are already integrated into the sauna. The customer prepares suitable surfaces for those feet to stand on rather than constructing a separate set of supports for the building itself.


The difference is not necessarily about the price of a few concrete blocks or paving slabs. It is more about simplicity, responsibility and design: knowing what has already been designed as part of the sauna you are buying, both structurally and visually. It is also worth considering what the support solution will actually look like once the sauna is installed. Are you happy to leave it visible, or will you need to find a way to hide or cover it?


Ground Screws and Screw Piles for Outdoor Saunas


Ground screws, also known as screw piles, provide another way to support a freestanding outdoor sauna. Steel piles are installed into the ground to create individual load-bearing support points. They can be particularly useful where extensive excavation or concrete work is undesirable, and because individual piles can be installed at different heights, they can also work well on many sloping sites.


Ground conditions matter. Rocks, very hard ground or bedrock can affect whether screw piles are suitable, and the appropriate type and installation method depend on the site and the load they need to carry. When suitable for the location, screw piles can provide an efficient way to create stable support points while keeping the sauna raised above the surrounding ground.


What Should Be Under an Outdoor Sauna?


The way the sauna itself is supported is only one part of the equation. The next question is what those supports stand on. There is no single answer for every outdoor sauna or every site.


A properly prepared gravel or crushed stone base is a common and practical solution. It can provide a stable surface while allowing water to drain away efficiently. Concrete or paving slabs can then be positioned at the sauna's load-bearing support points.


A full concrete slab is another excellent option. It provides a strong, continuous and accurately prepared surface and may make particular sense if a concrete patio or larger outdoor area is already part of the project. But a concrete slab is not automatically necessary for a freestanding outdoor sauna. Pouring one normally involves more site work, time and cost than simpler alternatives. Before constructing one specifically for your sauna, it is worth checking what the sauna you are buying actually requires.


An existing paved patio may also provide a suitable base. The same can apply to a deck or terrace if it is structurally capable of carrying the sauna and its occupants and providing stable, level support points.


Whatever surface you choose, a few principles remain the same. The support points need to be load-bearing, stable and level. The entire surrounding garden does not need to be perfectly flat, which is particularly relevant on sloping sites, but the points supporting the sauna must be correctly prepared.


In colder climates where the ground freezes during winter, frost conditions should also be taken into account. Depending on the site, appropriate ground preparation or frost protection may be needed to help keep the sauna stable through seasonal changes.


Water should be able to drain away rather than collect beneath the sauna or around its support points. Grass and other vegetation should generally be removed from beneath the sauna before installation so that plants do not grow against the lower structures and the area beneath the sauna can remain open and dry.


There are also sources of water from the sauna itself that are easy to forget. Rainwater and snowmelt from the roof need somewhere to go, and the ground around the sauna should be prepared so that this water drains away rather than collecting underneath or around the structure.


Water from inside the sauna also needs to be considered. Hetki Saunas have an integrated floor drainage system for excess water. If the sauna includes a shower, the larger amount of wastewater should naturally also be taken into account when preparing the site.


None of this needs to turn the installation of an outdoor sauna into a major construction project. It simply means preparing the site appropriately for the sauna you have chosen.


What Should You Ask Before Buying an Outdoor Sauna?


The foundation of an outdoor sauna is mostly invisible once the sauna is installed. That makes it easy to overlook when comparing products. But it tells you quite a lot about what you are actually buying.


How is the wooden structure kept off the ground? Does the sauna come with its own feet or support structure, or do you need to build those separately? What does the sauna need to stand on? How level do the support points need to be? How does air circulate beneath the sauna? Where does the fresh air come from, and how is the sauna ventilated? Where does rainwater, snowmelt and water from inside the sauna go? And what site preparation is actually required before delivery?


These are not questions intended to make buying an outdoor sauna complicated. Quite the opposite. Getting clear answers before you buy makes the rest of the project much simpler.


There is no universally best foundation for every outdoor sauna and every site. Gravel, paving, concrete, piers, ground screws and other properly designed solutions can all have their place. What matters is that the complete system works together: the ground beneath the sauna, the support points, the way the sauna itself is constructed, its ventilation and the way the wooden structure is protected from prolonged moisture.


A foundation may be one of the least visible parts of your outdoor sauna. But if you are buying a sauna to enjoy for decades, it is worth looking underneath before you decide.
